Signs Your Chimney Needs Cleaning
The clearest signs a chimney needs cleaning: visible black buildup inside the flue or on the damper, a campfire smell in the room, fires that start reluctantly or smolder, and soot or debris dropping into the firebox. If any of these sound familiar — or it's simply been over a year — it's time.
What you can check yourself
With the fireplace cold and the damper open, shine a flashlight up past the damper. Shiny or matte black buildup on the flue walls is creosote; a dull layer thicker than a coin's edge is worth a professional look. Check the firebox floor for flakes, soot or bits of debris that weren't there before — material falling down the flue always has a cause.
Your nose is a legitimate instrument. A sharp campfire odor on hot or humid days means deposits inside the flue are off-gassing. It's more noticeable in Arizona summers, when the fireplace sits unused while the chimney bakes.
Signs people tend to dismiss
Fires that need constant coaxing, smoke that hesitates before drafting up, or a fireplace that 'only smokes when it's windy' are draft symptoms. Sometimes the cause is buildup narrowing the flue; sometimes it's an obstruction like nesting material. Either way, the flue isn't moving air the way it was designed to.
A long stretch of non-use is itself a reason. Dust, debris and animal activity accumulate in dormant Arizona flues, and the first fire of the season shouldn't be the test of whether the system is clear.
What happens if you wait
Creosote doesn't go away between seasons — each fire adds a layer, and heavier deposits are harder and more expensive to remove. Because the buildup is combustible, professional bodies recommend keeping flues clean rather than letting deposits accumulate year over year. A cleaning visit is quick, tidy and cheap compared to what it prevents.
